Today, Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine is a 209-bed comprehensive, acute-care medical center specializing in women`s and children`s services, surgery, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, gerontology, psychiatry, emergency services, and community health education. Last year, the hospital had nearly 17,000 admissions; performed nearly 13,000 surgical procedures; delivered over 3,200 babies; and treated more than 76,000 patients in the Emergency Department.

Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine is a private, not-for-profit, community health care provider, governed by a community-based board of trustees. Opened in 1973, the original 59-bed, short-stay hospital has grown into a 209-bed comprehensive, acute-care medical center specializing in women's and children's services, surgery, cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, gerontology, psychiatry, emergency services, and community health education. In July of 1998 Howard County General Hospital joined Johns Hopkins Medicine.

  • HCGH staff includes over 1,700 full- and part-time employees.
  • HCGH is the third largest private employer in Howard County and employs more than 1,000 Howard County residents.
  • Nearly 500 volunteers contributed over 45,000 hours of service in FY 2008, working in all areas of the hospital and the community in support of the hospital and its services.
  • The professional staff is comprised of over 800 physicians and allied health professionals, representing more than 70 specialties and subspecialties. Ninety-three percent of the physicians are board-certified in their specialty.

  • HCGH provided services to more than 165,000 people.
  • Provided outreach and wellness programs to more than 40,000 people.
  • Admitted 16,858 patients to the hospital.
  • Performed 12,614 surgeries. Of these, 3,621 were performed in the hospital and 8,993 were performed as outpatient procedures at The Center for Ambulatory Surgery or in the hospital's main Operating Room.
  • Delivered 3,236 babies.
  • Evaluated and treated 76,668 patients in the Emergency Room.
